Firstly, what a great selection of guest judges. I have been such an admirer of Karin Kain since I was ten. She is so elegant, posed, professional, and classy. Not only is she a treasure to the dance world but a treasure to Canada. It was nice to see her in the spotlight again. The other guest judge was Dan Karaty. He is a hip hop dancer/choreographer from the states. I really like him. My (dance) opinion rarely sways from his and mostly I like that he tells it as it he sees it. He doesn’t sugar coat things but he is professional, honest, and gives really good constructive criticism.

Secondly, FINALLY! By God the show has finally arrived! Seriously, the show was a let down and quite disappointing for the first 3 weeks. Every week was improving but it wasn’t at the same level as last year (by far) and it definitely wasn’t at the level the American version until NOW! Yeah! This week had a ton of great, great, routines and it is going to be very difficult to chose two people to go home.

HIP HOP- Cody and Melanie

These two did a really great job. They were right into character and executed very well. However, I wasn’t such a huge fan of the choreo. I didn’t think it was overly original and the same theme of last week is creeping back a little… Sex to replace a lack of creativity?

CHA CHA CHA – Vincent and Amy

That routine did not excite me… in the beginning. But then, once that death-drop-lift-thingy happenend, it has smoking! I loved it! So much fun, passion, and excitement. The ending was one of the best endings I’ve ever seen! It really impacted the routine and made it totally memorable. Loved it!

HOUSE - Everette and Tara-Jean

Ever since last year with Vincent, Lisa, and Sho-Tyme, I have been a huge fan of HOUSE! Everette and TJ looked fabulous and effortless. It was fun, entertaining, and I really like how they took a few beats to get the crowd into it.

CONTEMPORARY – Emanuel and Kim

This was the first routine of the entire season, that I believed the performance instead of simply watching the performance. The timing was impeccable and worked beautifully with the music. It was nice to seem Kim in a more serious role versus a sex kitten and of course this is much more up Emanuel’s alley so he did well too!

DISCO – Daniel and Jayme Rae

This routine was energetic and fun. The tricks were very well executed. The split lift that Jayme Rae did with her head lower then her body was insane and truly made me nervous. (I have very little trust in my partners and don’t even like to be dipped let alone lifted.) However, the thing with disco is the actually dancing isn’t very technical and I agree with Dan that they didn’t commit enough to the actual dance portion of the routine.

WEST COAST SWING – Danny and Natalie

Performance of the night! I loved it… So creative and the fusion between Hip Hop, Jazz, and Swing were amazing. The commitment to the performance was excellent. All around fabulous. I have nothing negative to say at all!

JAZZ – Austen and Corynne

I take it back… THIS is the performance of the night! I am virtually speechless. The dancing, the choreography, the acting, the commitment was unbelievably excellent. The only critique I have to say is Corynne did seem a little uncomfortable with the gun and I didn’t quite believe her, until… She shot Austen and threw her had back in a sinister laughter; Ha ha ha ha ha!

OVERVEIW

Umm… are ratings low? Because this week, selling sex was definitely the theme! There were some very racy moments which I have mixed feelings about. Is using sex a creative outlet or a cover up for lack of creativity? Muy interesante!

Top Performances – Hip Hop – Daniel and Jayme Rae

Worst Performances – Rhumba – Danny and Natalie; Hustle – Nicholas and Jenna Lynn

JAZZ FUNK - Emanuel and Kim

Whoa! RA-CY END-ING! Damn…Totally unexpected! This piece definitely wins for shock value that is fo’sho! I thought the choreo was good but not the best. Emanuel was the magician/ ringmaster/imaginative character, which suited him because if he had the task to emulate Justin Timberlake-- it would have been a flop! I agree with the judges that he is definitely growing as a dancer. Kim… good job but again, I don’t think her performance was anything overly spectacular other then the shock value.

HIP HOP –Vincent and Amy

There was some very intricate choreography in that routine, specifically the tutting sequence towards the beginning. Very well done! Vincent did amazingly. Amy did well too but for me, it wasn’t quite street enough. Overall kudos to both.

CONTEMPORARY – Austen and Corynne

Well done. I enjoyed it. Specifically I really liked the beginning where Corynne was leaning against Austen’s leg. I thought it was very pretty, simple but elegant and something that took a lot of creativity to see. The highlights include obviously, Corynne’s leg extensions and the jumps/leaps/catches which were all well done on both parties’ behalf. I must say, my eye did wander towards Austen a little more then it did to Corynne.

MAMBO - Cody and Melanie M.

Very cute… very cute! I like! They really captured the spirit and attitude that a fun, entertaining, lively mambo needs. I disagree with the judges a little and think that Melanie did outshine Cody just a tad. Technically there is some work to be done; specifically Cody needs to remember to DANCE when Melanie is doing her turns and not just stand there. Also, the tricks were a little shaky and Melanie did a little slip. Is it me or are there a lot of noticeable slips this season? Either way, good job to both.

QUICK STEP – Everett and Tara-Jean

Ok… not bad. Good energy with the exception of the actual ‘quick step’. It needed to be a little bit more exaggerated and punchy but I think they did grasp the overall technique and presented a great performance.

HIP HOP – Daniel and Jayme Rae

Hmmmm… I like but I don’t. The choreo was pretty good but when so much sex is being used, it always makes me wonder if it’s a substitute for lack of creativity. As for the dancing, I thought they did well but to be perfectly honest, I thought last week’s was better. However, last weeks routine (dance hall) was A-MA-ZING and every week isn’t going to be at that capacity so… good job to this week!

HUSTLE – Nicholas and Jenna Lynn

Interesting!!! Some fabulous moments! There energy was fabulous, super high, impactful, and carried throughout the entire routine. Jenna Lynn has some really great leg extensions but I agree with Sean Cheeseman, that she doesn’t partner well. She is out to perform for herself and not as a partnership which unfortunately for this show, is really important. Nicholas I think really tries to work with her and he is a solid performer.

RHUMBA – Danny and Natalie

Everything Sean Cheesman said, I agree! I was totally nervous for Natalie… A crumper, who had to do a 180 and switch her personality and style successfully transforming into a saucy mamacita. Though, the beginning was a little slow for me, I was very impressed. I have never seen this style of rhumba on any SYTYCD. It had an authentic Latin feel and wasn’t too romanticized the way ballroom-style rhumba is.

OVERVIEW

This was an exciting week! Much improved from last week so that was good but I still see a lot of nerves coming through. However, if this week improves as much as last, then there is nothing to fear and this season will be as fabulous as last years!

Top Performances: Dance Hall – Daniel and Jayme Rae; Contemporary – Vincent and Amy; Jazz – Natalie and Danny

Bottom Performances: Theatre – Emmanuel and Kim; Smooth Waltz – Melanie B. and Austen

THEATRE – Emanuel and Kim

Wasn’t really a fan of this piece. I felt they were dancing to the choreo instead of just dancing. Meaning you could tell they were performing and it wasn’t totally believable. Although, Emanuel did do a better job in his facials! Overall I found the choreo to be a little bit boring. Sean Cheeseman’s choreography is a hit or miss with me. He is either fabulous or a snooze fest… Sorry!

CONTEMPORARY – Vincent and Amy

This was a really well done piece. The characters were believable and well crafted. The dance itself was really technical and physical and I thought they did a very good job!

DANCE HALL – Jayme Rae and Daniel

what! WHat! WHAT! This routine was so sick! Definitely the best performance of the season to date! It was entertaining, provocative, both performers were equal to one another and they had chemistry. I really enjoyed it and was thoroughly entertained! I love Luther’s shout out to C.W. Jefferies!

PASA DOBLE – Anthony and Corine

This was ok. When you compare it to Natalie’s pasa doble’s from last season, there is a little something missing but nonetheless, they did a respectable job. I felt the costume was really distracting and got in the way a little. As for the fall… well covered! They kept performing and I was fully guessing as to whether that was done on purpose or not. Shout out to the split leap/catch by Corine. Her leg extensions are breathtaking!

HIP HOP – Nicolas and Jenna Lynn

Nicholas did a really great job. I would love to see him and Natalie pair up for a hip hop routine! I thought there were some ‘in sync’ issues but overall they played into their characters and I really did like the choreo. Jenna Lynn was a little self absorbed in this performance. She didn’t really feed off her partner are work to get a chemistry going. I felt she was performing more as a solo then as a partner.

JAZZ – Danny and Natalie

This was so good! I loved the choreography. It suited the music perfectly and I felt Natalie played her role perfectly. She has this understated elegance and a subtlety in her timing that is nearly impossible to detect but it makes all the difference in her dance style. I really like her and so far, she is my favourite dancer.

SMOOTH WALTZ – Austen and Melanie B

The choreography and opening was very dramatic and full of impact. However, the dancers did not live up to the expectation the opening created. The dancing was awkward and though the lifts were nice, you could see hesitation on Melanie’s behalf. Unfortunately I feel this was the worst routine of the night.

OVERVIEW

what! WHat! WHAT! SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA is back! Yeah! However, after watching the top 20 last week, I am singing a different tune. Boooo! I am so disappointed with last week's performances. I didn't think the dancers or the routines were very exciting and they were a little amateurish. I also hitnk the judges were much too nice. there was a lot more criticism that should have been said. I realize it is the first week so they are trying to hype the sow up and all that doda, but honestly, I would be a much bigger fan if they were more true then polite.

However, I do have hope. This was only the first week after all. I am hoping this was a simple case of fluttery butterflies and nervousness. As the dancers gain more experience, get more comfortable with each other, and become familiar with the stage, their dancing, showmanship, and style will grow. Plus, there was derinately some excellent and impressive moments among the top 20. I can only imagine that it will grow.

Favlouite routine of the night - HIP HOP - Danny and Natalie

Least favourite routine of the night - SAMBA - Vincent and Amy

Check out my critiques below!

JIVE - Everett and Tara-Jean

The introduction to this routine was wicked, sassy, and well executed! I think they showed great energy and had well delivered tricks. In terms of the actually dancing, not bad but they definately have some work ahead of them. They really need to execute their turns (as partners) with more fluiditiy. I felt that there were sections where you could tell they were dancing to a choreographed routine instead of just having fun and making it look natural. Also, I thought the horse riding section was a little wiered but that really isn't the dancers' fault but rather the choreopgraphy. Overall a good show peice.

SAMBA - Vincent and Amy

It was pretty obvious they made a huge blunder when Amy's foot slipped off Vincent's leg causing them to miss the gigantic lift at the very beginning of the routine which was meant to set the tone for the whole shebang. (Definately a downer especially since the clip prior hyped it up so much). But they didn't give up for a second. They continued to perform with smiles on their faces demonstrating good showmanship and professionalism. However, that doesn't excuse the rest of the routine! It was simple choreography that should have been danced larger then life! I thought the routine lacked energy, their turns (as partners) were weak, and the music demanded ferociously gyrating hips which were nowhere to be found. In addition, I felt Vincent soft in his movement and not as masculine as I would have preferered. Through I love Jean Marc's expression "Tabasco Toes" , I must respectively disagree.

Contintued from "SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE CANADA - TOP 20 (part one)

CONTEMPORARY - Cody and Melanie M.

A highlight of the evening! This is Melanies' style so you expect here to do well bu this was not Cody's and he did a very respectibel job... pointy toes and all! The choreo wasn't over the top but solid nonetheless. The pair were fluid, graceful, and had great chemestry together.

HIP HOP - Emanuel and Kim

Straight from the 90s, pure old skool! Loved the concept and definately a tribute track/routine to the way back play back fans out there. It was fun, groovy and definately representative of that era. More importantly, I thought Emanuel did quite well! (Surprising as that may seem!) Kim obvioulsy shined as this is her bread and butter, but Emanuel impressed me a little more then I expected. I think my biggest critique for him is to work on his facials expressions; he had a few strange ones!

VIENNESE WALTZ - Anthony and Corynne

I thought the routine was pretty and well danced. I don't think it has much stay power in terms of future recalls of great routines but I enjoyed it nonetheless and thought it was a great first time out on the stage together. Corynee's leg extensions are so long and effortless and I am totally envious because my legs don't look anything like hers.

HIP HOP - Danny and Natalie

This was my favourite of the night! I hougth it was a great routine; fun, energetic, true to it's style, and the dancers did well. In fact, Natalie killed it! I love her style and I can't wait to see what she is going to do in the future!

AFRO JAZZ - Danny and Jayme Rae

Technically this routine was very challenging. I said it before and I'll say it again, afro dance is one of the hardest styles I have ever attempted. Every part of your body moves a different way holding different rhythms to the music. they did very well... but that doesn't mean I liked it. Honestly, half way through I totally lost interest. I don't know if it was the repetitive music, the yellow spotted lights, the dancers, or the choreography but I dozed off for about 3 seconds. Seriously... I actually fell asleep. Yikes!

DISCO - Nicolas and Jenna Lynn

The first 3/4 was boring! However, the last quarter was outstanding. The energy picked up, they had great coverage over the stage, their barrel jumps were fabulous! I really enjoyed it. I think in this case, my dislike isn't so much the dancers but the routine. It really isn't what you'd expect to see in a "disco" routine. Tre had a point when she called it 'contemporary disco'.

CAPOEIRA - Austena and Tatiana

This was great! Much better then the capoeira from last season's fianl show. I thought the dancers did amazing. No one out did the other. It should great partnership and I really like the feminine qualityt that Tatiana brought to the stage.

Tango - Taylor and Melanie B.

The choreography was fantastic! Fresh, unique, and definately the most intricate routine of the evening. However, though the dancers did put on a good show, technically it was nothing to write home about. Personally I expected much more from Melanie as she is used to dancing with a partner.

Top 4 Dancers – Street Jazz (opening routine)

This routine had a great beginning and a great ending. I lost interest in the middle. It didn’t have enough changes within the music and the choreo. Plus, I find when they split the group in half, you only get half the story and that is exactly what was happening, Natalie and Miles were doing one thing, Nico and Allie another, and together it probably looked great but we only saw a portion of it. Overall good job!

Natalie and Nico – Salsa

Really loved the concept. Shaking hands at the end was awesome! And of course the dancing was awesome. They really do this style well and the tricks are like wearing old hats for them. Great work!

Allie – Solo

This was Allie’s best solo yet. You can see how much she has grown throughout this competition. Jean Marc said it best when he said “diffusion of style”. That is exactly what she has done. She is fabulous!

Miles - Solo

This song was perfect for Miles to pair with his skills. I also think it was perfect for his ending routine. I agree with what Luther Said about him being one of the most improved dancers on the show… he definitely is! I also like that even though he never went out of his style for his solos… every solo had a different vibe.

Natallie and Miles – Hip Hop

This routine was good… it had lots of energy and they really got into the vibe. I don’t think that difficulty was all that high but well done. They did have some togetherness problems and they claim to have made mistakes on steps but I didn’t catch it… which means they stayed in character. Excellent!v c

Allie and Nico – Contemporary

This was nice… it didn’t take me breath away and I didn’t really see that break through moment but it was still good, danced well, entertaining, and true to it’s story.

Natalie – Solo

This was a good solo… true to her routes and she included a pasa double vibe which she clearly stated she loved way back at the beginning of the show. One thing that I cannot stand is that it is always so obvious that she choreographs her routines because her ending is always 1 or 2 seconds before the “so you think you can dance” words hit the song. Blake is right though, she did something different every time which is really difficult.

Nico – Solo

His solo was really good…

Allie and Miles – Theatre

Ok… didn’t love this one. I didn’t really like the choreo. There were some parts where Allie would make a move and then it would be nothing afterwards. Blank space… that’s the worst when there isn’t supposed to be any! I think the beginning was child like and amateurish as Blake stated but I think they picked it up in the middle and then the ending went back to the amateur quality.

Natalie and Allie – Go Go

Energy was definitely lacking on this piece. If you listen to the music, it is so precise and literally has a driving beat throughout it. Plus, the choreo was easy… a lot of walking and posing, I do that walking to work! However, I must say I think it is unfair of the judges to be so hard on the girls now so late in the show when they let so much else slide by in the previous episodes. I think the choreo was good but the outfits were so 1960s… didn’t sell it for me.

Miles and Nico – Capoeira

The flip Miles did off Nico’s back was SICK!!! So crazy. Overall this routine was really well done. I thought the choreo was done well to the music and the boys performed it well.

Summary

Overall the routines were not fabulous this week but each person had to learn 4 routines and perform them in a matter of 5 days. That’s insane even for professional dancers! I think they did well and even though I didn’t vote for all of them. Who do I predict to win? NICO! I think his popularity and his superior dancing will win him the title. Who do I think will be runner up? It’s hard to say but either Natalie or Allie. I haven’t been the biggest fan of Natalie but she is a good dancer and definitely has passion. Allie is so versatile and strong. Miles has grown immensely as a dancer and though I don’t think he will take the title, he is on a successful path.

Lisa and Miles

Contemporary

This was a really pretty dance. I really enjoyed the partnership of seeing your lost one’s face again and think that just about anyone can relate to that scenario. Miles is impressive and truth be told I never thought he’d make it this far. I still don’t think he should be top 6 but since he is not going down with out a fight. Love Tre’s little poem. Love Jean Marc’s freestyle even more!

Cha Cha Cha

This routine was entertaining. Clever choreography, a cute (mmm, hot?) ending and overall good dancing. Personally, I don’t think the technique was fabulous and I think the judges were very lenient this week. Not just for this couple but for all of the couples. Maybe I’m being a little harsh. I’ve said this before, sometimes the energy gets lost on camera but… I think it’s the judges this week.

Lisa – Solo

Loved her solo! This is the first time I’ve really seen her get a little funky and urban on her own. She did a really good job playing the character and I think this routine shows her versatility.

Miles – Solo

I loved it! I thought it was so fun and very entertaining. Loved the costume, the music, and the vibe. Good job Miles!

Natalie and Nico

Quick Step

I really enjoyed this piece. The song, the choreo, the costumes! Perfect old school glam! This is the first routine of the ENTIRE show that I felt Natallie shed her sexy, intense character and played this one with class and ease. And of course Nico was great… when isn’t he?

Disco

This was a really good dance. There lines were so precise and proportioned to one another and the hit all of the hits perfectly! For the dancing alone, I really enjoyed this number. Didn’t love the costumes so much but what can you do?!

Natalie – Solo

Natalie’s solo was good this week. I thought it was right up her ally and definitely emphasized her strengths. And although she was playing a sexy blond yet again, I think it was different from her other solos due to its masculinity versus sex kitten.

Nico – Solo

His solo was a much more contemporary opposed to hip hop this week. I liked it! Again, he is showing his versatility by doing something different. Definitely worthy of top 4.

Allie and Izaak

Jazz

Forever by Chris Brown… definitely a fan favourite! This routine really was in the words of Mary Murphey “Sweet”. I thought the Cinderella twist in the end was quite clever. In fact, I am glad to see a different interpretation to this song. Twitch and Comfort did hip hop to this song last season on the American version and it was pretty good. I still think about it when I hear the song playing on the radio. Allie makes her lifts look so effortless, it baffles me! I think that Izaak pulled his weight in this routine so that’s definitely a good thing but again, just not top 10 let alone to 6.

Hip Hop

I thought the hip hop was good! Allie brought it and for once Izaak partnered her well! That’s it... short and sweet!

Allie - Solo

Alli looked so beautiful in her perrywinkle blue tutu! I find her solos refreshing and truly look forward to them. She is so poised and cute!

Izaak – Solo

I didn’t really like this routine. Izaak should have been out of here a long time ago. Since I feel that way, I want to see something completely outrageous and excellent. Not rolling around on the floor “artistically” to a rock song. Ugh… puh -lease! As you can see I definitely do not agree with Tre on this one.
